PLANET BY KOTA YAMAJI x CULT

Planet is part performance part music/visual installation combining some of the most moving sonnets and speeches from Shakespeare emanating from four singular actresses - Jean Ng, Noorlinah Mohamed, Nora Samosir and Karen Tan. Juxtaposed against the actresses’ stark humanity is the pop and surreal world of Japanese digital artist Kota Yamaji. Yamaji’s play on vivid colours and repeating patterns embodied by objects and characters takes the viewer into a heightened and fascinating universe that he creates. In the midst of the industrial steel and bricks of the interior of a decommissioned power station, against a canvas of mesmerizing and richly saturated digital art, the women are flesh and their humanity sears, connecting them to all the living species of this planet, visible and invisible to the eye.

There are four pieces:
P-1: Tir’d with all these, for restful death I cry
An actress escapes the weight of her humanity as she contemplates her presence in the presence of the natural world.

P-2: No longer mourn for me when I am dead
An actress escapes the weight of her humanity as she embraces a multispecies worldview.

P-3: Be not afeard
An actress escapes the weight of her humanity as she looks into the life of plants.

P-4: When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes
An actress escapes the weight of her humanity as she allows the land to be her teacher.

SOMNI BY INTRIGUANT

Being awake when living, being alive when dreaming. The path to defining reality lies in a deep dive through streams of the semiconscious, where proximity and distance merge, and the present with timelessness coincide. Desire dissolves as ambience takes the wheel and loops itself into a spiral of indulgence. This awareness of chaos brings forth elation, and the abandonment of senses brings forth logic. As the mental creeps in as metal, so does ambiguity render itself into intimacy.

SOMNI is an experiential route to the depths of slumber, probing how the perceptions within carve consequences onto our realities.

Running with Strippers 2021: This Close occupies the cavernous Pasir Panjang Power Station to evoke a gathering in a time where we have grown accustomed to different ways of being together.

Six stages occupy the station. The Music Stage is set up in collaboration with UPLOADING where multi-hyphenate beatmaker Intriguant pairs music acts with video artists in a heady rush of trippy audio-visual gigs. Upon four performance stages, Planet, becomes 4 performance pieces set within audio-visual installations where the most moving sonnets and speeches from Shakespeare emanate from four singular actresses. Finally SOMNI, a boxed installation that lulls the visitor into an arresting waking dreamscape.

CAKE’s Running with Strippers platform, as an attitude, has always looked to unusual, odd, vacant spaces, like beneath viaducts, industrial drive throughs and hollowed-out classrooms to inspire adventurous artmaking and the gathering of people. In 2021, we explore creation at the power station in an excursion combining music, video art, installation and performance while grappling with the voluminous emotions raging within, in the journey of wilderness through this sprawling world.

At the Station. Powered by a wilder strain of creative energy.
