Running with Strippers initial inception began in 2011 as Decimal Points, a space for artists from a range of disciplines to make performances from the vantage point of their unique artistic perspective. This was our commitment to experimentation, to show alternative.

In 2015, we stripped our former studio bare to host the first iteration of Running with Strippers. Since then, Strippers has grown to embody the germination of ideas in arid spaces. Our meditations came into focus within the gaps. Dead spaces we saw as potential for fluid and divergent ways to meet minds and create. A space where art begets art. We saw a necessity to wrestle out of the ennui that threatens to cloud the creative space, that pushes risk, experimentation, defiance and stubbornness out of the picture, giving way to lethargy, fear and ease. Strippers has grown to become a resistance against institution, coercion, the status quo - ambling along like a nomad, occupying odd non-spaces; un-defined in-significant vacant spaces, and moving on. The more momentum it garnered, the more Strippers defined for itself what it was, the proliferation of the fiercely alternative in the arts.

All said and done, Strippers is about Cake unabashedly throwing a party. A party to precipitate art making in the spirit of dare.

We look forward to welcoming you at a location undisclosed until your arrival signals a revelation.

Sypnosis

Cake’s Decimal Points series was first launched in 2011.

Sometime in 2010, the desire to push at the possibilities of art making led us to think in terms of ‘performance-making’ as more encompassing and where more traditional notions could be dismantled. We asked ourselves - do we need to start with a playwright? What if the person helming the work was a visual artist or a musician rather than a theatre director? How would the work be different?

This line of thinking led us to the conception of Cake’s Decimal Points series, an artistic endeavour we took on to deepen our position as innovators. It also established our commitment to experimentation. The premise was simple, we would reach out to artists from a range of disciplines and they would create a work coming from the vantage point of their unique artistic perspective.

We would give them the space and provide them with the support they needed to mount the work. They were not bound by anything; they could create in accordance to their artistic impulses and thematic interests. All we set were timelines, so that there would be markers to chart the progress of the experiments and at a certain point the work would have to be ready to meet with an audience - which is an important step for any work, be it work-in-progress or finished piece.

With that, Decimal Points grew to become a series of art experiments that fueled artistic creation through process and exploration.

From our first instalment in 2005, Cake has mounted twenty-one instalments featuring more than ten Artists and Collectives from a range of disciplines and created three Art-events featuring multiple-works in a unique Experimental Art-meets-Underground Party atmosphere.

In 2018, Running with Strippers features prolific Visual & Sound Artist Zai Tang, DJ Cherry Chan and Video Artist Brian Gothong Tan to create new instalments.
